Identification
Field Marks: The eastern subspecies is characterized by its possession of transverse pale stripes on its carapace, following the seams between the scutes, particularly at the rear of the first and second ranks of pleural and vertebral scutes, which are aligned. In the midwestern subspecies, which approaches North Carolina from the west, these scutes are not as aligned and no pale stripes are present.
