Basis for Records:
Specimens are needed for any observations located away from the French Broad River at Hot Springs. Photographs taken of individuals from that site need to clearly show the pattern of stripes on the side of the head, needed to distinguish this species from Pseudemys concinna which have also been documented at Hot Springs.
Description:
This subspecies lacks the large yellow patch behind the eye found in the nominate subspecies and has a narrow yellow line on the rear of the head where subspecies elegans has a broad red stripe.

Distribution in North Carolina
Distribution Comments:
This subspecies has its range mainly confined to the upper Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers (Ernst and Lovich, 2009) and appears to only marginally present in North Carolina. Definite records have been obtained from the French Broad River at Hot Springs, right on the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee. Specimens collected at this site by Jeff Beane, RA Davis, and LT Pusser are deposited in the collection at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
