Distribution in North Carolina
Comments: Within its rather restricted range, this species exploit s a variety of habitats from the low oak/ pine forests of the northern Gulf Coastal Plain to the high elevation hardwood forests of the southern Appalachians . Along the Bartram Trail at Wayah Bald, Macon County, North Carolina, W dixiensis is well established in hardwood forests at elevations around 5200 fee t and occurs syntopically with W. bimucronatus within and beneath rotted logs .
