The median area is contrastingly dark, often with a reddish patch between the orbicular and reniform, which are usually filled with the ground color or are more whitish. In males of this species, the median band is strongly tapered at the inner margin where it is approximately only an eighth of the total length of that margin (Forbes, 1954). Females are much darker and the median area extends to cover a third of the length of the wing. The hindwing in the female is dark fuscous.
