Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Found in North Carolina primarily in open habitats, from maritime dunes, inland sand ridges, old fields, and residential areas. A few also come from forested habitats.
Larval Host Plants: Forbes (1948) lists Pisonia (Devil's Claw) as a host plant, but that species is not found north of Florida. Covell (1984) adds Amaranths, one species of which -- Smooth Pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus) -- is found throughout North Carolina. Robinson et al. (2010) also list Marvel-of-Peru (Mirabilis jalapa) and American Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana), and there are multiple BugGuide records of larvae on pokeweed. - View
