Species Status: Chytolita petrealis is currently treated by some authorities to be a synonym of C. morbidalis, following determination that the type of C. petrealis was a C. morbidalis. Prior to that realization, however, the name C. petrealis had been applied to a distinct and much rarer species in the Southeast. The authors who sunk C. petrealis did not realize this, so our C. petrealis (here referred to as 'Chytolita sp. 1') has no name at the moment. To make things more complicated, there is another undescribed species like it from the mountains (referred to here as 'Chytolita sp. 2') that has only a few records as of 2024. The C. petrealis that has been most widely recognized is present primarily in the Coastal Plain and eastern Piedmont (J.B. Sullivan, pers. obs.).
