Adult Markings: The ground color is gray without any brown tint; paler in the spring and "mouse gray" (dark gray) in the summer (Forbes, 1954). The antemedian is strongly scalloped and excurved. The postmedian is dentate but not marked by dots. The subterminal is clay-colored and usually broken, with thick dots on the veins. It is also preceded but not followed by a dark shade. The reniform is yellow and outlined in black; sometimes entirely black. The hindwing is concolorous.
Wingspan: 30 mm, spring males; 25 mm, summer males; 27 mm, spring females; 23 mm, summer females (Forbes, 1954)

Larvae ID Requirements: Identifiable only through rearing to adulthood.
Distribution in North Carolina
Distribution: Occurs essentially statewide in North Carolina, but is uncommon at higher elevations in the Mountains.

Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Our records come from most types of habitat found in the state but with only a couple from the High Mountains. Both forested and open sites are used, and xeric as well as wet-to-mesic habitats.
