Taxonomy
Family: Tettigoniidae Subfamily: Copiphorinae Tribe: Copiphorini
Identification
Field Guide Descriptions: Online Photographs: BugGuide, Google Images,  iNaturalist, GBIFSINA 193a.htm
Singing Behavior: Song is a continuous, dry, raspy buzz (Elliot and Hershberger, 2006). The dominant frequency in several of our recordings is at 15 to 15.5 kHz. Neoconocephalus triops, velox, and robustus have similar songs but are lower in pitch and usually much louder. In North Carolina, retusus matures in September, whereas both velox and triops only sing earlier in the year (although triops is present as non-singing adults through the winter).
Recording playback at normal speed.
